Stephen Rice and The Brabant Ensemble have made the first-ever recording dedicated to Pierre Moulu, two complete Masses (including the extraordinary Alma redemptoris—it can be sung with or without rests) as well as motets.
Two fantastic piano albums this month: a fifth instalment of Clementi Piano Sonatas from Howard Shelley (including the Op 36 Progressive Sonatinas), and a quartet of Beethoven Piano Sonatas from Steven Osborne that is perfection itself. The Florestan Trio offer up a complementary—and diverse—programme of Czech Piano Trios, Smetana, Martinu, and Eben charting a fascinating development of the genre.
Two re-issues this month: James O'Donnell's first recording with Westminster Cathedral Choir unearths vibrantly undiscovered Palestrina, and His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts Grand Tour takes us on a whirl around Italy, Spain, and Germany—extreme virtuosity abounds.
