Two contrasting vocal recitals offer fascinating perspectives on love, loss and desire six centuries apart. The Orlando Consort continues to explore the music of the fourteenth century with Machaut A burning heart. It is a particular pleasure to welcome soprano Sophie Bevan to the label in a wonderful late-Romantic programme of Reger Songs. She is partnered by Malcolm Martineau.
This month sees two divergent releases from LSO Live. The London Symphony Chorus directs its massed voices towards the Rachmaninov Vespers, one of the greatest contributions to Russian sacred music of all time. Simon Halsey conducts. Steve Reich's Clapping music & other works gives centre-stage to the LSO Percussion Ensemble in a riot of rhythmical expression.
On Signum Classics this month we have the Philharmonia Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi captured in a thrilling live recording of Schubert Symphony No 9, the 'Great' C major symphony which was to influence so many others. Naji Hakim continues his Hakim plays Hakim series, performing a globe-trotting second instalment of his works on the fabulous Schuke Organ in Bilbao.
Also on Signum, a new series from Malcolm Martineau invites us into the wonderful Complete Songs of Gabriel Fauré; a host of singers, including Ann Murray, Iestyn Davies and Joan Rodgers, contribute to this first volume. David Goode has recorded a second album in his Complete Bach Organ Works series, the varied programme drawing delicate intricacies in sound from the organ of Trinity College Cambridge.
