The award-winning, Russian-born violinist Alina Ibragimova recently dazzled audiences at the Royal Albert Hall with her solo Bach performances. Now, returning to the recording studio she has teamed up with the outstanding ensemble Arcangelo under Jonathan Cohen to record five Bach Violin Concertos.
This is playing of the highest order. Never clinical or mechanical, Ibragimova's playing is deft and subtly restrained, swelling at times to pulsating and rich expressiveness.
The accompaniment is on a small ensemble of period instruments, warm and well matched to the brilliance of the soloist, with the addition of mandolin at times adding a distinctly contemporary folk-rock feel.
