The prospect of a well-filled CD of English romantic madrigals did not quicken this reviewer's hear—but how wrong I was! Rupert Gough and his Royal Holloway Choir consistently bring great sensitivity to this lesser-known material, their generally warm if not always generous tone, even balance and impeccable tuning enhancing these works. Of my favourites, Pearsall's Lay a Garland is especially effective, while Stanford's God and the Universe (a setting of Tennyson) is beautifully sung. A most welcome release, which should win many converts to this repertoire.
