The discovery of women composers continues apace. For the latest volume of its series of romantic piano concertos Hyperion has paired the British Dorothy Howell (1898-1982) and American Amy Beach (1867-1944), supported by a short Concertstück by Cécile Chaminade. Three women, three vivid personalities: Howell’s concerto is brooding like Rachmaninov, Beach’s as full of struggle as Brahms. All three give the pianist a real workout and the pulse races in Danny Driver’s wholehearted playing, strongly supported by Rebecca Miller and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
