Here are three masterpieces by John Sheppard, that Tudor giant whose music is characterised by densely structured, innovative textures and angular lines. There’s the glorious large-scale antiphon Gaude, gaude, gaude Maria and the opulent six-voice Missa Cantate. But first comes the Media vita, its slowly unfolding form containing vast richness of invention. The Westminster Choir under Martin Baker give their all in gracefully phrased, controlled performances.
