Recent highlights include role debuts as Don José in Carmen at Glyndebourne and the title role of Peter Grimes at the ENO. He made his house debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and a role debut as Števa Buryja in Jenůfa (ENO). John also revived the role of Luke in Poul Ruders’s The Handmaid’s Tale at the ENO, and spent the summer at Glyndebourne Festival in productions of Die Zauberflöte and Tristan und Isolde.
On the concert platform John recently made debuts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (under Martyn Brabbins) in Luigi Nono’s Canti di vita e d’amore, and the Ulster Orchestra (Jac van Steen) in Dvořák’s Stabat mater. He also made a studio recording of Pamela Harrison’s The Dark Forest with the BBC Philharmonic.
Past operatic performances include The Fool (Wozzeck) at the Royal Opera House under Sir Antonio Pappano, and Vašek (The Bartered Bride), Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Florestan (Fidelio) at Garsington Opera. At the ENO, John has sung Spoletta (Tosca), Mime and Loge (Das Rheingold), Paul (Die tote Stadt), Siegmund (Die Walküre), Innkeeper/Cock (The Cunning Little Vixen), Peasant (Luisa Miller), Le Remendado (Carmen), Heurtebise (Orphée) and Witch (Hänsel und Gretel). As a former Jerwood Young Artist, his roles included Matteo Borsa (Rigoletto), Melot (Tristan und Isolde), Florestan (Fidelio), Second Player (Hamlet), Officer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Giuseppe (La traviata) and Faninal’s Major-Domo (Der Rosenkavalier).
