Philip Hayes was a talented provincial composer. He was born in Oxford where his father was professor of music, a post he inherited in 1777. His six keyboard concertos were published in 1769 when he was living mainly in London and working as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. They are the first set by an Englishman to specify the piano, though in general their solo parts work equally well on the other specified alternatives, the harpsichord and the organ.

Philip Hayes était un compositeur provincial de talent. II était né à Oxford, où son père était professeur de musique, et il lui succéda à ce poste en 1777. Ses six concertos pour clavier furent publiés en 1769, alors qu’il résidait surtout à Londres avec les fonctions de Gentilhomme de la Chapelle Royale. Ce sont les premiers concertos d’un compositeur anglais stipulant l’utilisation du piano, bien qu’en général les solos produisent autant d’effet sur les autres instruments mentionnés, le clavecin et l’orgue.

Philip Hayes war ein talentierter Komponist aus der Provinz. Er wurde in Oxford geboren, wo sein Vater Professor der Musik war. Diese Stellung übernahm er im Jahre 1777. Seine sechs Klavierkonzerte wurden 1769 veröffentlicht. Zu dieser Zeit lebte er hauptsächlich in London und wirkte als „Gentleman of the Royal Chapel“. Dies ist der erste Satz eines Engländers, für den das Klavier vorgegeben wird, obwohl seine Soloparts im allgemeinen ebenso gut mit den anderen angegebenen Alternativen wirken, namentlich dem Cembalo und der Orgel.
