Gustav Holst’s folk-style setting, which tailors Rossetti’s words to four repeated verses, was first published in 1906 in The English Hymnal and soon established its place among the great hymns of Christmas. Mack Wilberg, music director of the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, brings sublime stasis to his arrangement with mantra-like melodic repetitions and close chromatic harmonies that meld like fallen snow.
