Roderick Williams orchestrated Ireland’s Sea fever (1913) and Great things (1925) for a 2017 concert by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Setting John Masefield (1878-1967) and Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) respectively, both songs reveal Ireland’s deep perception of English poetry. Great things has a hearty tune, apposite to the sentiments of the poem, in which a young man muses on whether his current joys in life—drinking, dancing and the pleasures of love—will remain with the passing years.
