Roderick Williams orchestrated Ireland’s Sea fever (1913) and Great things (1925) for a 2017 concert by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Setting John Masefield (1878-1967) and Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) respectively, both songs reveal Ireland’s deep perception of English poetry. Sea fever, whose text is taken from Masefield’s 1902 collection Salt-Water Ballads, became extremely popular with singers and audiences of the time. Its words reflect an old sea dog’s yearning to return to the call of the winds and waves. So evocative is Ireland’s response that the listener can almost feel the ‘flung spray’ and winds ‘like a whetted knife’. Reflecting the poem, Williams omits the bright colours of the oboes to emphasise darker orchestral hues.

Composées respectivement sur des textes de John Masefield (1878-1967) et Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), ces deux mélodies révèlent à quel point Ireland était sensible à la poésie anglaise. Sea fever, tiré du recueil de Masefield Salt-Water Ballads (1902), devint extrêmement populaire auprès des chanteurs et du public de l’époque. Ses paroles dépeignent la nostalgie d’un vieux loup de mer encore sensible à l’appel du grand large, et la musique d’Ireland est si évocatrice que l’auditeur parvient presque à ressentir le «fouet des embruns» et les vents «coupants comme un couteau». Faisant écho au poème, Williams se détourne des couleurs claires des hautbois en faveur de teintes orchestrales plus sombres.

Beide Vertonungen—von Werken John Masefields (1878-1967) und Thomas Hardys (1840-1928)—verdeutlichen Irelands tiefgehende Wahrnehmung englischer Poesie.
