Both a composer and an actress, Dring studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Herbert Howells, Gordon Jacob and Vaughan Williams, as well as singing with Topliss Green, alongside drama and mime. Instrumental music and songs were her main means of expression, although she also composed incidental music for plays for the stage, radio and television. Take, O take those lips away, setting a song from Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, probably dates from the 1960s. With its rocking rhythm, winning melody and refined harmonies, it is characteristic of Dring’s art. Williams scores it for chamber orchestra with a light touch.
