One of the most exciting tenors Britain has to offer today, David Butt Philip has attracted major acclaim with recent debuts such as the title role in Der Zwerg at Deutsche Oper Berlin, the title role of Brett Dean’s Hamlet at Glyndebourne, the Earl of Essex in Gloriana at Teatro Real, Erik in Der fliegende Holländer at Opéra de Lille, Laca in Jenůfa at Opera North, and Grigoriy in Boris Godunov at the Royal Opera House and the BBC Proms.

Other operatic highlights include debuts as Florestan (Fidelio) at Glyndebourne and in Prague, Lohengrin with Opera Australia, Prince (Rusalka) and Don José (Carmen) at English National Opera, and debuts with Wiener Staatsoper, Staatsoper Berlin and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as returns to the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Teatro Real, Glyndebourne and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Butt Philip’s highlights on the concert platform include performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, with The Hallé Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder at the Bridgewater Hall and the Barbican, and with both the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall; The Dream of Gerontius with the Tonkünstler Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein and in Gloucester Cathedral; Tippett’s A child of our time in Lisbon; Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with the Rundfunkchor Berlin and Kammerakademie Potsdam; Verdi’s Requiem with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Edward Gardner; Faust in Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust with The Hallé; Froh in Wagner’s Das Rheingold with The Hallé and Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Tanglewood Music Festival; Prokofiev’s Seven, they are seven with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms and with the Philharmonia; Mahler’s Das klagende Lied with Vladimir Jurowski and the LPO; Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at the Barbican; and Haydn’s Nelson Mass with The Hallé.
