John is also an in-demand sideman, regularly touring Europe and Asia. He has recorded over thirty albums with a wide variety of jazz, tango and classical artists, including Tim Garland, the Yuri Goloubev Trio, Alan Barnes, Transtango, the London Tango Orchestra, El Ultimo Tango, the Matt Ridley Quartet and many others. He is also known for his work with crossover ensembles, including recording and performing work with composers Alexander L’Estrange, Will Todd and Paul Mottram, renowned violinists Sabina Rakcheyeva and Thomas Gould, and the English Session Orchestra.
John co-runs the E17 jazz collective and curates their annual programme and festival. He also directs the thirteen-piece E17 Large Ensemble, his tango quintet ‘Almagro Ensemble’ and the co-led sextet ‘Solstice’, whose debut album ‘Alimentation’ was released in 2017 to rave reviews, accompanied by a twenty-date Arts Council tour. Their second album is due for release in 2019.
John is an experienced composer for strings, voices, jazz and tango ensembles, and was commissioned to write a new work for the contemporary tango dancer Richard Manuel and his tango quintet. He is a principal tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the Purcell and Yehudi Menuhin Schools, and regularly teaches at summer schools in Germany, Italy and the UK. He is also the external adjudicator in jazz piano at Trinity Laban.
