Ladislav Elgr (tenor)

Czech tenor Ladislav Elgr has been making a considerable career in recent years and has established himself as a sought-after singer and actor.

Recent highlights include the concert performances of Janáček’s Káťa Kabanová under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle in London, as well as in a new production (as Boris) for the Bergen Festival with Jiří Rožeň; Skuratov in Janáček’s From the house of the Dead at the Opéra national de Paris (Bastille), Opéra national de Lyon, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and with Staatsoper Unter den Linden; the role of Sergei in a new production of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, and also in a new production, under Alejo Pérez, at the Grand Théâtre de Genève; three performances of Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal under Rafael Payare; and a new production of Prokofiev’s The Gambler with Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Antwerp, where Ladislav gave his highly-acclaimed role debut as Alexei.

Other stage appearances include Eric (Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman) in Antwerp and Oper Leipzig; Albert Gregor in Janáček’s The Makropulos Affair with Donald Runnicles and director David Hermann; Prince (Dvořák’s Rusalka) at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing), with Glyndebourne Touring Opera, and at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, as well as a concert performance with the Concertgebouworkest (Amsterdam); and Boris in Káťa Kabanová at Staatsoper Hamburg and with Opéra de Toulon. He has also appeared at Teatro la Fenice (Venice), the Festival Janáček Brno, the Theater an der Wien, and Opera Graz.

On the concert stage, Ladislav Elgr has sung, among others, Dvořák’s Stabat mater, Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht and Elias, Janáček’s Šárka with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin in the Philharmonie in Berlin, Bruckner’s Te Deum, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, and Verdi’s Requiem in the Herkulessaal in Munich. With Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass, Ladislav Elgr made his successful debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker conducted by Pierre Boulez in the Musikverein Wien in 2011, and in July 2019 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Karina Canellakis.

Ladislav Elgr studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and during his studies he sang, among others, Maškarón in Bohuslav Martinů’s Hry o Marii, Vašek in Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, and the four tenor parts in Janáček’s The Excursions of Mr Brouček (with Sir Charles Mackerras) at the National Theatre Prague, as well as giving his successful debut as Jeník (The Bartered Bride) at Smetana’s Litomyšl Opera Festival the Czech Republic.
