Mark Simpson (clarinet)

Mark Simpson enjoys a dual career as both composer and clarinettist working with the leading musicians and orchestras of his day.

His oratorio The Immortal received the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Classical Music (2019) and a recording of his ensemble composition Geysir and Mozart’s Gran Partita (Orchid Classics) won a Presto Recording of the Year award and was shortlisted for the 2021 Gramophone Awards.

His violin concerto written for Nicola Benedetti was premiered with the London Symphony Orchestra (co-commissioned by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, RSNO and WDR Koln Orchestra) and since performed in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. His cello concerto for Leonard Elschenbroich was premiered with the BBC Philharmonic, his chamber opera Pleasure was premiered by Opera North and his orchestral work, Sparks, was premiered at the BBC Proms.

In 2024 premieres follow of Phôs scored for choir, wind and brass ensemble with a text inspired by the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke for the Salzburg Bach Choir at the Salzburg Easter Festival, and Darkness Moves II for french hornist Ben Goldscheider combining the instrument with electronics. Instrumental concerti for violist Tim Ridout, pianist Vikingur Ólafsson and guitarist Sean Shibe are currently being created.

Mark has recently given the world premiere of Thomas Adès’s work for basset clarinet and string quartet Alchymia. He has since performed the work across Europe and more recently given its USA premiere. He continues his partnerships with Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Jean-Guihen Queyras in performances of music by Helmut Lachenmann. He has been Artist in Residence at King’s Place and the Aldeburgh Festival.

Concerto highlights have included the world premiere of his own Clarinet Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic, Lindberg’s Clarinet Concerto at the BBC Proms and Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Simpson was recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Award (2010). He was the first ever winner of both the BBC Young Musician of the Year and BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year in 2006.
